Janet started loving the outdoors when, in her late teens, she moved to Mt. Shasta, California. In her mid-20’s she found herself living at the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, where for the next 20 odd years she worked and learned to play hard outdoors; hiking, biking, running, rock climbing, backcountry skiing, whitewater kayaking and backpacking. For 10 years, Janet organized and led backpacking trips for women through the Tahoe City Parks and Recreation Department where she worked as Recreation Supervisor and then Park Superintendent. In her late 40’s Janet and her life-long partner, Linda, moved back to the Mt. Shasta area and built their home at the base of Mt. Eddie. Always committed to community service, Janet took on the job of CEO of the Siskiyou Family YMCA, a post which she held until March of 2010. Now Janet works as Executive Director of the Siskiyou Land Trust in an effort to save and conserve wildlands, forests and agricultural areas in Northern California.
In the early 1970’s, Janet read about this new “Pacific Crest Trail” in a National Geographic magazine and vowed to, someday, complete the journey from Mexico to Canada. Well, it’s 2010, someday is here, and Janet is fulfilling a lifelong dream. Janet is dedicating her hike to raise funds for the Siskiyou Land Trust Endowment in an effort to provide the resources needed to save those “special places” which are in danger of being lost to over development.
Nana is also a life-long outdoor enthusiast. Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Nana enjoyed a variety of sports growing up. She was an avid skier, hiker, runner, cyclist and even played hockey on a men’s team! Nana’s other passion was sailing! Her late father Jack owned a “Cal 2-24″ sailboat and Nana was out on the Bay at every opportunity. She hung out on the docks of the San Francisco Yacht Club and ate, lived and breathed sailing whenever possible. As it turned out, this was a fateful experience as well for her future. It was at the Yacht Club where she first met her husband, Bill.
In late 1982, the decision was made to move to Lake Tahoe with Bill. They settled on the west shore of the lake and Nana continued her outdoor ways. Now she could ski all the time during the winter and run, hike, play golf and sail in the summers. She and Bill married in 1985 and this year will celebrate their 25th anniversary. (actually Nana will be “on the trail” but they will celebrate together in spirit)
Nana is a Acupressure Practitioner and has worked in the Chiropractic field for almost 20 years. To keep her sports oriented needs fulfilled, she also has worked “on the side” at the NorthStar Resort. You could find her at the golf course during the summers and the Mid-Mountain Lodge in the winters. This kept her happy with golf and ski passes around her neck!
Nana is an endurance athlete and has run several Marathons, an Ultra-Marathon and has walked, backpacked and biked hundreds of miles in support of Cancer Research. This year, she has partnered with HIKESTRONG 2010 to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. She is asking for everyone’s support for this worthy cause. More information can be found on the main blog page!
Bill and Nana own a second home in Ashland, Oregon and hope to re-locate there in 2011!

Met Janet on the south side of the Goat Rocks Wilderness of Washington State on Sunday, August 8th. This journey takes a lot of energy and spirit. It was a pleasure to meet someone with both.
