Both Nana and Janet will be taking SPOT, Emergency Rescue Beacons. These units, described below, sends messages by satellite to pre-setup contacts via E-Mail and Text message. These are the newest generation devices.
With this device, all either has to do is hit the OK button and it sends a message to me with their exact GPS location and lets me know that everything is okay. If either needs help, they simply hit the HELP button and it does the same. If it is an emergency, all they have to do is hit the SOS button and the International Satellite Resource center dispatches SAR resources to their exact location immediately. Very handy indeed. Here is what the folks at SPOT have to say about their unique product.

SPOT. THE WORLD’S FIRST SATELLITE MESSENGER.
With the SPOT Satellite Messenger, you and your loved ones have peace of mind knowing help is always within reach. SPOT is the only device of its kind, using the GPS satellite network to acquire its coordinates, and then sending its location – with a link to Google Maps™ – and a pre-programmed message via a commercial satellite network. And unlike Personal Locator Beacons, SPOT does more than just call for help. Tracking your progress, checking in with loved ones, and non-emergency assistance are also available, all at the push of a button. And because it uses 100% satellite technology, SPOT works around the world – even where cell phones don’t.
